We’re glad you asked! Cinco (Fifth) de Mayo (of May) is the date of the Mexican army’s victory over the French, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, in the Battle of Puebla. On that date, in the face of overwhelming numbers, the Mexican army routed the French forces of Napoleon III. The battle took place on May 5, 1862. According to the History Channel’s online site, this holiday is also observed in Mexico, but not at the level we do in the United States. The larger celebration in Mexico is September 16, celebrating Mexican independence. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of all things Mexican – our heritage and culture.
Manny’s Tortas should rank high on your list of places to be for Cinco de Mayo. Treat yourself to one of our gourmet tortas or our appetizers, salads, and desserts.
